MySpace privacy settings consist of the following main categories:
- Basic profile information
- Stream settings
- Profile content
- Visitor settings
The basic profile information is set by default to be public and anyone on the internet having a MySpace account can view that information.
Your basic profile information contains your display name, your real name if, and only if, allowed by you, your gender, age, location, profile picture and a URL that you might have specified. This information can also be searched by a search engine like Google.
Your stream settings consist of the titles of the content and the original content that you viewed on the internet and the audio streams that you have listened to on the internet.
They may consist of a song, a video or a movie trailer. You have the option to allow or not allow your friends and contacts to view these settings. If you do not want to share your content, you can simply change the settings to your preferred ones under the “My published activities settings” option.
The profile content section is dedicated to the content that you have uploaded on your MySpace profile yourself. This includes your interests, your “About Me” section, the name of your college, school, company, organization, your favourite quotation, movies, singer, photo albums, videos and events.
Here again you have the ability to limit access to certain areas for your friends, or friends of friends or strangers. It depends upon your selected preferences.
The My Visitors settings track your visits and the visits of your friends. If you have turned this option on and you visit a friend’s page and he too has this option selected then he will see on his home page that you have viewed his profile.
Similarly you will be shown the names (display names) of all the visitors who viewed your profile. The My Visitors settings only work when the visitor and the host both have turned it on.
The MySpace privacy settings are simple and easy to use. In front of every information tag you have the option of setting its visibility. If you set it to “Anyone”, everybody will be able to view that information.
“Anyone” is the default setting for all users 18 years of age and above. Choosing the “Only My Friends” option makes your content visible only to your friends and anyone not in your friend list will not be able to view your content. This is the default setting for all users 18 years of age and below.
Your photos, albums, videos, comments, sharable streams and blogs each have their own item privacy settings. This means that you can chose which object will be hidden and at the same time opt to show the item of the same kind and category. The events and playlist also have their own item privacy settings and the same rules apply to all playlists and events. However the streams are managed by your profile privacy settings and the per item privacy rule does not apply on streams.
